FEMME BOI, a short split, marked a noticeable stylistic shift for electronic artist Half Truth (now Mx FM). After dabbling in moody techno, experimental sound collages, and sugary synthpop, the artist pursued a sonic transition that matched their emotional transition. FEMME BOI was released very shortly after Half Truth discovered that they were transgender. It debuted at a small Chicago arts exhibit featuring the artwork and music of other queer and trans youth. It was subsequently released as a free download through UNKNOWN GIZA.
FEMME BOI is characterized by its 90s-esque trance sensibility, but incorporates the trademark quirkiness of a Half Truth release. Pitched up non sequiturs stutter across a bubblegum landscape, which occasionally dips into unexpected bass drops and trap rhythms. FEMME BOI contains an almost sinister subtext to contrast its saccharine demeanor, but maintains as an undeniably catchy pair of dance songs.
